hook_nodeapi() ?

This allows you to modify a node during various portions of the product load.

Also, I ran across a form ahah frameworkmodule the other day. Some of this will be integrated into drupal6, but until then, this looks promising. I believe you can set for actions, handlers, and the location the update will be applied.
