Thanks so much taking the time to explain how default node.tpl.php operates. Seems that nothing is simple!

Did change out the code and the images did display. However, when the image was clicked on thickbox would display with the dark background and loading bar but would not go any farther. Seems that thickbox could not find what it was looking for some reason.
