Common sense!
Based on the experience that an overly complicated one page checkout is MUCH harder for a user to grasp than a simpler 2 or 3-stage checkout.

And as I said earlier a lot of really large e-commerce sites have multi-page checkout. I would think that someone looking at revenue streams in the hundreds and thousands of million dollars have done their homework and did not leave anything up to speculation.
Which tests are you referring too?
