I can view the catalog block by itself OK: www.rainbowislandpearls.com/catalog
But I can't figure out how to combine it with a text node.
I tried the "panels" and "front-page" modules but they don't seem to do what I need.

You can do this:
- Create a new "top content" region above the "content" region (http://yubastudios.com/blog/drupal-creating-new-regions)
- Create a block for your introductory text
- Set the new block to only display on the /catalog page.
