ron_s, it's like I write that post myself! I am having the exact same issues. Luckily, I am still in the testing phases of the site so I do not have to worry about complaining customers just yet. I have noticed that the roles are assigned sometimes and then not assigned others. Sometimes the admin comments on the order will say "subscription not registered" or something like that and other times it will work perfectly.

I will look into the Authorize.net solution, thanks Ryan. I would really love to offer paypal to my subscribers though. It almost seems like it should be standard this day in age.
