Are you using the core Authorize.Net module? This most likely has something to do w/ HTTP vs. HTTPS access... although before I make that diagnosis, you should see what Firebug in FireFox has to say about it. The "Net" tab should show you what POST requests are going on in the background on the checkout form and why they're not working.
