I have been working a new module to try to fill in some gaps for what seems to be a proper way of handling different scenarios.

This provides a default view to start with but will definitely require custom adjustments, but as being done with views it allows a lot of flexibilty.

Please read the project page in detail as it has very useful information.

Hope this is found as a nice alternative.

Dev version will be there soon, you can try git if you are impatient. Recommended stable (or beta) release will be there soon as well.
