OK, I read through http://www.ubercart.org/forum/announcements/983/alpha_7e_released

I read that the payment and shipping folders were new to Ubercart, and that I had residue left over from previous versions. Once I deleted the duplicate modules, the hippies started dancing.

It seems that Ubercart now works perfectly with Update Status.
