Ubercamp - July 25-27, 2008

As was announced today, we're planning an Ubercamp in and around Louisville, KY from July 25-27th. Folks who come down Thursday can also spend the day on Friday hacking away on Ubercart or other projects in the Ubercart office. This will be a pre-camp activity, with the official schedule starting in the late afternoon as we travel down to the Lake and get ready for an awesome weekend.

My stated goals in the news post were threefold: set the stage for future meetings, pass some knowledge around, and plan for the future. I'll add here that another goal would be to keep the gig as cheap as possible, especially with a lot of folks making the expensive trip to Drupalcon Szeged a month later. As such, depending on the level of response we get, we should be able to put folks up in our homes if you come in on Thursday night. Furthermore, we're just a few minutes from the airport (SDF - Standiford Field), so we can arrange to pick folks up who fly in Thurs./Fri. Pricing for the group will really just depend on gas to get down there, gas to run the boats on the Lake (especially if we can hook up some skiing/tubing Smiling), and what kind of food/drinks we want to have.

We're about 99% certain the houseboat will be available at the Lake, so we can avoid renting cabins or anything. However, we're not entirely sure about a runabout for pulling folks. If too many people to fit on the boat RSVP, we'd be up for doing some actual camping around the Lake, too. Please let us know in this thread if you think you might attend or if you will attend and how many people you would bring. This will help us plan ahead for the travel and accommodations. Assuming we can lock this down quickly, we'll go ahead and set a price for the weekend.

Mike O'Connor will be co-coordinator of this event. I'd love to just be responsible for a short keynote/development roadmap presentation and spend the rest of my time enjoying your company and following Mike's lead. I'm sure we can get a tentative schedule worked out pretty quickly and have an idea for the types of topics we can cover in our time together. Word's not out yet on what the Camp Song and Camp Motto will be, but I'm sure Mike can dream up something appropriate. Eye-wink

I'd love to have some input on work / fun for the weekend, as well as a song / motto / logo.

If anyone has any special dining needs please pm me.

Look forward to your input and seeing everyone there.

Ryan/Mike,

I will make a point to free myself up for a couple days, it sounds like a great way to keep the project/community moving forward. I am not a developer by trade but I have been using ubercart for some time and could help out with usability feedback, finding bugs, any any other ways to be useful. With most of my working experience being in warehouse management and order fulfillment I should be able to help with general order work flow and picking list/packing list templates.

Depending on the number of people interested and the final location of the gathering I might bring my jet ski for some after work play. I hear that lake is a heck of a scenic ride.

Hopefully others have some time and flexibility to hang out with the UBER crew.

See Ya There!

Hi,

I would love to come to discuss about European shop features Eye-wink but I'm pretty sure the plane trip will be too much for my boss and for the little shop I work for.

I will try, can you have a webcam in the camping ? Eye-wink

For anyone seriously interested from overseas I have an offer that might help cost wise. I live near Detroit, MI and will be driving down. Flights to DTW will be cheaper because it is a bigger International airport If you can get into DTW by Thursday July 24th at/before 6pm local time I could pick you up and you could ride down with me on Thursday night to be there Friday morning. Plan on flying out Monday morning 7am local time or later. This offer is open to anyone who finds it cheaper to fly to DTW and therefore is able to come. This offer is limited to two people because of room in my vehicle though. First come first serve. You can PM me to discuss details not relevant to the community.

And I'll just add that if you're coming from overseas you should definitely stay more than just the weekend. I have a guest room, wireless network at home/the office, and a wife who's fluent in French if you fancy a couple day's break in Louisville. Eye-wink

Regardless, I'll try to make sure there's at least some sort of discussion/planning related to i18n and multilingual site usage in our time together.

I'd be happy to extend the same offer, however you will have to fight my dogs(a great dane, and a lab) for the guest bed, and we have a 7 month old that is just learning to use his vocal chords, and still wakes up during the night Smiling

Rough Ubercamp Schedule

be a "pre-camp" activity, meaning come if you can, but we won't

4 PM - Leave for Lake Cumberland... get setup, have some fun, catch some Z's.

July 26

Morning(not too early) - Roadmap / Keynote from Ryan, some short presentations and hacking time. Topics are yet to be determined(please make some suggestions)
Afternoon - Have some fun, chat about our experiences, get to know each other.
Evening - Possibly an evening hackathon

July 27

Morning activities, last bit o' fun, head back to Louisville and drive on home.

My partner, Christefano, and I are coming. I lead a dual schitzoid existence between theming and dev work.

Can someone give us a rough idea of how much our financial contribution might be and what we'll need to bring? Would we need camping gear? Sleeping bags? Power strips?

I'll get Andy to post in about the necessary gear. If I understand it right, we shouldn't need camping gear or bags... the boat should hold everyone comfortably who's responded. Power strips we can bring from our office, and I'll figure out the electrical situation.

Informally we figured that $50 would cover the cost of food for the weekend and gas for a runabout if we're able to get one for some water sports. I think the working idea is we'll just get a pool of money and divide the spoils. We might need to pitch in for gas for the drivers taking us down to the lake... more details in the morning. Smiling

I was going to say about the same thing, if you are flying in packing lighter is probably better, I am sure there will be lots of supplies from the group of us driving, and the "locals".

Ryan, I am planning on bringing my jet ski, 3 seater so you can tube with it, bringing a tube as well, I don't know about skiing, I haven't tried that with it. If do you end up finding another boat no big deal, wouldn't hurt to have two toys.

Andy, Is there a decent grill on site? We tend to like cookout food, burgers, brats, and such.

Anyone have a count as of right now? I think I know of 8. Three from Michigan, three locals, 2 from out west. Any others as of right now?

I will not be able to come, we have a lot of saloon in october and, as I'm the graphist of the society too, I cannot negociate that with my boss.

But promise me, the next year, do that in france Smiling

PS : If you can install a mic and a webcam to launch some hours of videoconferences, I can be there to participate to the debate. ^^ Just give me an hour (and a timezone ^^')

hah I'd love to do it in France. Laughing out loud

We should get an #ubercamp IRC channel or be hanging out in #drupal-ubercart during the conference. Believe it or not, I don't have a laptop, so I'll be spending my time hanging over other peoples' shoulders. Smiling

@thill: There will be 5 locals counting Christina (my wife) and Jes (Andy's girlfriend). I've heard from at least one person they might try to stop by for a time, so if we plan on food for one extra person that should keep us safe.

Also... jetski sounds awesome! Cool

The houseboat we are staying on is large. It has four full bedrooms (2 queens and 4 twin beds) plus a couple of comfy couches and oodles of floor space. Many people choose to sleep on the top deck under the stars. It has a full kitchen including frig, freezer, range, and microwave. We also have a nice grill on top with a griddle. Usually we just grill out and never use the range. The boat has a generator which provides power through an inverter which cleans the power up quite a bit. When docked we plug directly into the power grid. We will bring a UPS or two from the office, but I don't think we will need them. We have been using laptops on the boat for years without issue.

What should I pack?
You will need comfy cloths for the weekend. Shorts and t-shirts or similar. It gets a little cool some evenings, so you might want to bring a long sleeve T or similar. You need a swim suit. We have plenty of towels on the boat, but remember the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says "A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." So maybe you should bring yours Smiling You need sunscreen and any other sun shading items you prefer like sunglasses or a hat. You need toiletries. You probably want to bring your laptop and other coding implements. We will have wireless at the dock, and probably interface through a 3g phone when we are out on the lake. The boat has a sound system, so bring your IPOD.

What should I not pack?
Bedding. Unless you have special needs, it is already on the boat.

What about food?
Mike has graciously volunteered to bring the meat. We will stop at a grocery store on the way to the lake and purchase all the drinks and groceries for the weekend. This should allow most everyone to get what they want to eat and provide for anyone who has special needs (Vegie, Vegan, lactos, etc . . ) The lake is in a dry county (I know, I know) which means there are no stores selling alcohol within 30 minutes of the dock. So be prepared.

I think that just about covers it. If there are any other questions or anything I forgot, let me know.
Peace,
Andy

I'm looking for session/topic proposals. We will definitely have a state of Ubercart presentation by Ryan. My personal topics of interest are

  • Improving theming
  • Cool future features
  • Usability enhancements

Please post anything that you'd like to talk about, regardless of if you are attending or not.

Wish we could be there, but travel expenses are too steep right now. As I mentioned to Mike/Ryan, I'd be happy to hang out in an IRC channel to keep track of progress and pipe in on theming stuff as necessary Smiling

I'd love to see easier ways for non-technical users to manipulate the display of the cart and product pages, and also help with theming improvements. Usability is another huge one. And I'm eager to follow the progress of the Drupal 6 version.

We're packing right now.

Have to admit to ignorance with using workflow-ng in conjunction with Übercart and would like to understand that better. We're also interested in site subscriptions., how to do autorenewals, and chargebacks.

Can't wait!
