I have decided to start a project to build a drupal distribution specifically for building and maintaining a paid subscription/membership site. If you are not familar with drupal distributions take a look at OpenAtrium or OpenPublish.
I am calling this project ubership, which was an attempt to combine the words "ubercart" and "membership".
It will be a free, opensource GPL project - since it will just be a collection of modules/theme/profiles hosted on drupal.org
The idea is to take modules like uc_recurring and uc_roles and provide a real working example of a site configured and setup to manage online paid recurring subscriptions.
At the moment there is nothing to download and play with but I am looking for your help, feedback and ideas to workout what this application should look like? So if this project interests you please following the twitter account or subscribe to the RSS feed as I will be asking for feedback. To kick this off there is a poll on the site asking what payment gateways you are most interested in for recurring subscription products...
