Install Instructions

Bug FinderGetting busy with the Ubercode.

I've noticed people knocking Ubercart a bit lately for difficulty with install and setup. I think those are two of Ubercart's strengths...but I can see some reason for the complaints. There are some very nice docs, but they could be easier to get to.

A logical first step for someone new to the site is to go to Downloads, but if this is as far as they go they will download Ubercart and then run into the problem of dependencies and end up discouraged and confused.

Going to User's Guide -> Installing Ubercart -> and then clicking either the Existing or New Drupal install link provides nice documentation, but I'm not sure users are finding that. I saw talk of restructuring the Ubercart site, and I think think this is one issue to keep in mind. Maybe moving the Installation link to the main menu would solve any confusion.

One other point about Ubercart's dependencies is that a suggested version would be helpful. Workflow-ng in particular is developing in a way which might mean that Ubercart needs to suggest a version other than the latest release.

Yeah, I don't fully understand the knocks on "installability", but I'd love to take ideas like this into consideration to make it even easier. So, +1 to what you've outlined here. I think shrinking the "What is Ubercart?" page and moving to a "Getting started" type page will be better.

I was looking to clean up the install pages to a simpler list of instructions (with a list of recommended module versions & direct links).
