Ok, this may perhaps be one of those "how long is a piece of string" type questions but I was wondering how much US based companies would charge for a simple little Drupal website that sells 16 or so products at a time. Site will feature a gallery of items then clicking on photo will jump to product listing page. Usual about us / contact pages etc. too.

I am beginning to think that I way underbid on my current project. Drupal = 0.000001% of my time, UberCart = %99.999 - perhaps it's just a learning curve thing?? Anyway I'd be interested to hear what designers would charge and no I'm not expecting anything as silly as a couple of hundred bucks for a Drupal site as one lady told me at a recent Drupal meeting! Note to self, perhaps I should of written this post before I bid on and accepted the gig !!! Sad

I'm saying $500 as the absolute minimum.. If the client is able to pay, $1,000 or more is not unreasonable I would say.. You might THINK it'll be done in 20 hours but unexpected changes and such could make it take much more.. =) If you know you're capable of doing the work, and you know that you're good at what you do, get paid what you deserve! =)

Neither doctors nor lawyers deliver to spec. Get paid what you deserve.

Most doctors I've met would be making less than minimum wage if they got paid what they deserve.. =)

Just to confirm, you mean you're charging more, not less, right?

Re: Yes

I guess it really depends on the client. We don't do any full site builds ourselves, but I know some of the shops that we refer people to start quoting over $100 / hr. for design/building/support and will negotiate the price from there. If all your clients are mom and pop shops, I imagine a set price like Myke's is actually quite reasonable. If I were to setup a site like you described using a contributed theme I could probably have it finished and deployed in just a few hours. Granted, I'm writing the code. Eye-wink

But once you know what Ubercart provides and how to configure it, you should be able to setup a store in an hour or less.

(EDIT: I will add, though, that if your clientele and their budgets make allow for it, you should be charging more.)

Re: Re: Yes

But Ryan, if you'd finished the store so quickly you'd have to figure out what to do with all that free time!! Perhaps I should be like that guy I read about on Digg, he outsourced his job to various people and still made some good money - his employer was none the wiser. Of course you need to have good people and then you have to manage them, and all of that free time ......

I guess it's true, I can blow out a Drupal site from one of my tweaked templates in a couple of house pre-configured with SEO goodies and Analytics. Next store ...... But you still have to train the client how to add content and Drupal is not the most user friendly CMS for the end user as compared to say Joomla.

Re: Re: Re: Yes

Definitely true. I mean, your figures of a few k aren't unreasonable at all for a fair sized project with good client support. I'd deliver a more "canned" solution for less, but as I mentioned, I'm not actually in that business. Our interaction with clients is usually piecemeal coding/bugfixing and sponsored Ubercart development.
