change attributes in the cart

I just came across something, it doesn't seem possible for a customer to change the attributes of a product that they have added to the cart.
If they can, could someone please let me know how.

If not, there seems to be two possible solutions.
1) when viewing the cart, make the attributes editable in the cart, so when they press update cart button, they change.
2) make the link for the product in the cart, goto to the product page with the attrubutes filled in, ready to change. Currently the link on the product title just goes to the product page, like you would see when you want to add a new product to the cart.

I think solution 1 would be the easier and more logical solution.
Any suggestions on how to implement it would be appreciated.

I considered taking a stab at this. I still might if I have some free time. I'll post it as a contrib if I get around to it, but I wouldn't hold my breathe for it.
