Hmm... perhaps I accidentally set this to default enabled.

You can turn that off to prevent new users from getting logged in or adjust your checkout completion message accordingly. You can also enable a textfield for customers to specify their own username, but you may run the risk of a name collision tempting the customer to abandon his or her cart.
