Just a short note to announce the opening of classicvinyl.biz, an online classical music record store built with Ubercart. Still have some theming to do, but the basic infrastructure is up and the store is live. (I had to close the online saddle store (greystokefarm.com/store) because of declining business, a function of the economy, I suppose.)

Thank you Ryan and Kyle for making this possible.

Best, david

Re: Classicvinyl.biz

Bummer about the Greystoke site, but nice job on the new one! I like the clean, simple design. I think I might recommend floating your product images so they appear horizontally instead of stacked vertically, but that might be more personal preference than experienced designer's eye. Eye-wink

Hope this one does well for you!

Good idea about the horizontal images. I will work up a view and see what I can come up with. d

Ahh, cool idea. I'm sure we can make use of that when we get our company's sites migrated to UC. Is this the Question module or something else?

CCK and Views. Amazingly simple. The comment (admin only) is the answer. Views ticker provides a nice effect in the sidebar.

Now if I can just figure out how to give discounts (using uc_alternative_price, I am guessing).

Hi David, Took a look at

Hi David,

Took a look at your site today. In the process of developing a site for a new punk vinyl record company. Not yet live, but close.

Had an observation and a question.

Observation: Viewing in Firefox 2 on a Mac, I'm curious why your price fields in the left sidebar bleed out past the sidebar. I can see the one composer, Wilhelm B-R, pushing that field over, but the price fields don't make sense to me.

Question: I need to add an audio sample to the site and was wondering what module you were using. In the past, before I began working with CMS systems, I have used quicktime and MP3s. Why the choice of flash? Was that inherent to the module you are using or have you "rolled your own"?

All in all, the site looks sharp. Good job. And congrats on the SEO success. I followed your yahoo link and you're in the number one position.

Regards,

Mark Harrison

Re: Hi David, Took a look at

Hi Mark, thanks for your note. I don't know what's up with the price fields, I don't have access to a Mac and cannot see it for myself. If you have any clues I'd be grateful for what you can tell me. I'm sure that my site would never pass any sort of rigorous css validation. Eye-wink

For the audio, I am using the audio module (http://drupal.org/project/audio). It works well right out of the box and comes with a few different player options. There are other media player modules, but I found audio to be the most flexible for my purposes.

best, david h.

Cache or not

Hi David,

I took a look at your store, looks nice and works pretty fast.

Since I am in the middle of evaluating several e-commerce solutions (amongst them Ubercart) I was wondering whether you use caching on your site at all. And do you use dedicated hosting?

So far I found out that Drupal without caching turned on is faster than Magento (duh!) and Prestashop. But still - those two come prepopulated with lots of product and whatnot while Ubercart needs to be populated by hand which I have done partially Smiling

This would be my first time setting up an online store (for my wife) and I am a bit nervous about choosing the right solution.

Lukasz

Re: Cache or not

Hi Lukasz. I am using caching on my site; I have it set to the normal setting, which is recommended. I also am using some modules that compress javascript, which helps, and have enabled page and CSS compression as well. And yes, my site is running on a virtual private server, and I have about 1000 megs of php memory dedicated to it. best, david

Thanks for the response!

I took one more look at your site and it seems there's no "view cart" link to be found while browsing it. Is this related to the empty cart showing problem I read a lot about?

Anyway - a VPS - okay then Smiling I think we will be starting on a shared hosting first. I tested ubercart on said hosting with 128M dedicated to php and it worked fine and fast (I used the ab testing tool - 10 concurrent requests).

I added a "My cart" menu item at the top left of the main menu bar under the header. Thanks for pointing that out! best, david
