For some reason, anyone is able to download file attachments that should otherwise be hidden until a purchase is made. I followed the steps for setting up file downloads, but I do not see an order status drop down. Any thoughts?

Did you make sure to put the directory containing the downloads outside of the web root?
ie. if your drupal installation is in /www or /public_html you should put the products to download in /[product_download_folder]

Yeah, I did... When I change the file system to be public, they can no longer download the files.
What still bothers me though, is following this tutorial: http://www.ubercart.org/docs/user/10966/selling_files - about half way down where it shows the File Download settings, I do not have the Order Status drop down. At one point, this was working just fine.

On my site, I have to go to Store Administration/Orders/View Orders and then click on an order and scroll all the way to the bottom and my Order Status drop down is located there.
See if you can find yours there.

I can see the order status there. I think I've narrowed the problem down to when a user uploads a file, they need to uncheck "List". Otherwise it will list the file (even though it is not downloadable). I just went through a test run, and I was able to purchase an item, then retrieve it after purchasing. I'm thinking my issue may be more of a preference than an issue.
