I plan on selling software on my store. Some software will be FREE and some will cost money. The non-free items are easy enough to setup in the store. I'm interested in setting up some FREE software items (that the user can download) and I would prefer that the user doesn't need to add items to their cart and go through the checkout process for it.

I realize that FREE items might not be well placed inside a store, but I figured that for continuity sake it would be good to keep ALL my software products in the same place (whether they are FREE or not). The catalog seems like a good start, but I want to avoid complications like cart checkouts for FREE items.

Any advice for this?

Re: Any way to allow free downloads without checkout?

How about just add them as a file attachment at the bottom of the node?

Suggestion : if i was to do

Suggestion :
if i was to do something as this , ( esp the software download part) , i would still keep the product in my store and mark it as $0.0 . The reasons being :
1. The user has to go in the store to get the free download. As he finds the product he wants to download, he will be browsing through the remaining products. Having said that , he might just like the idea of having a better software for some cost than the one he was downloading for free
2. This also helps one to keep an ordered track list of what all softwares have been downloaded.
May be , a free software can be downloaded by user X number of time. Why would i suggest such a scenario. In case the free software being offered happens to be a big file ( say 50 - 100 MB) , and we got whole bunch of a particular community needing the software and downloading the same. The performance can be an issue, and also makes sure only real people are downloading the content.

I'd keep it in the store, too, for simplicity's sake. You can use my UC Free Order Payment Method contrib to bypass payment for "purchases" of free files. AOL did this on their corporate site to distribute marketing materials nd other files.
