Is there a way to show new or random products as a block so I can have a couple on the side bar?

Try looking into the Views_Slideshow module . . there are some good tutorial sites out there that can help you get it set up. You will likely set it up as a block and then place the block into the sidebar. Im looking into putting one on my site.
