I would like for customers using my site to be able to purchase items via credit card without having to create a PayPal account. According to PayPal, this is supported (by both Website Payments Standard and Pro, I believe). However, I can't seem to configure Ubercart to do this. Is it possible?

this is a PayPal configuration setting, not an Ubercart setting.

You'll need to login to your Paypal account. Click on the Profile link after logging in, then in the Selling Preferences section, click on the link for Website Payments Preferences.

There should be a radio button to make sure that the Paypal Account is optional and not required. Make sure the setting is set to On so that folks can purchase without PayPal accounts.

One thing I've noticed is that PayPal really, really, really wants everyone to buy directly from them, so if a potential buyer tries to purchase something from your site and uses an email address that is linked to a PayPal account already, the link for using a credit card is basically buried. Just something to keep in mind if anyone complains that they can't purchase from you via PayPal using a CC# instead of their PayPal account.

This info is germane to PayPal Website Standard. The Payments Pro module is integrated w/Ubercart to the point where the users shouldn't see any PayPal screens at all AFAIK. Everything s should be handled directly from your site.

I discovered that the SANDBOX does not support this functionality! I switched to Live and, suddenly, people have the option to check out without creating a PayPal account.

I mentioned this to PayPal and they said that the Sandbox SHOULD be identical -- but I can reproduce this over and over again, so they appear to just be wrong.

In any case, it is working for me now just fine -- people can check out via PayPal using only a credit card without ever creating a PayPal account -- as long as I am using PayPal Live and not the PayPal Sandbox.

I'm having trouble. paypal is forcing my customers to create a paypal account. How do I fix this?

I tried double checking all the settings on paypal and in ubercart.

Are you still using the Sandbox? If so, see my post above -- when I had this problem, it was because I was using the Sandbox. When I switched to live, suddenly, the option to check out without joining PayPal appeared.
