it says i have
Subcategories with no products to display will be shown on category pages.
how do i change that setting?
how do i change this empty subcategory setting?

The description of that setting is worded badly, it seems. Looking at the place that setting is used, it doesn't have anything to do with th number of nodes in a category. It's really the setting to show the smaller subcategory links. They still won't show up if there aren't any products in them, but the setting allows you to keep them hidden.
On the catalog settings page, it's the 4th checkbox.

it a setting that doesnt do anything is what i understood.

Well, i have a question for you:
There are a few subcategories in my UC shop. Start page ([catalog]) seem to be fine – showing all the categories, small subcategories and the rest. When I go to the category that has all its items as Products, it is all fine – they show up very well.
However, when I try to access the category that has only subcategories – and no Products as it is (they all are in subcategories) –nothing is displayed there.
I can, however, access the item individually (knowing its address), and it does who the breadcrumb. But the category which consist only from subcategories does not show anything…
If you need any comments, I am willing to to give them,
