Hey guys - I'm Ubercart faithful, fan, lover etc but I notice Drupal Commerce (now headed by the former head of the UberCart project Mr. Szrama) is now out of beta. This promises to be *THE* e-commerce suite for Drupal 7. On the flip side for D7, we have UberCart 3. Anyone have any experience with both? Why is DC better than UC3 - or vice versa? For my mind (and I would like to be corrected here) - what places UberCart ahead of Drupal Commerce is the extra plugins and functionality which make it such a powerful shopping cart solution. DC doesn't offer much by way of Gift Certificates, Discount Codes, Related Items, Wishlists etc etc etc. It seems very "bare bones" to me - which (until more 3rd party modules extending its functionality come along) make it a non-starter.

Anyone like to chip in? Would love to get thoughts/feedback on this.

Jason

Ubercart is a lot easier to set up and works right away.

I would be surprised that anyone supports Drupal Ecommerce ?

Drupal Commerce and Drupal eCommerce are not the same thing. ecommerce appears dead in the water. Commerce however is getting bigger and better all the time. Ubercart needs a good entry into 7 with lots of functionality if its going to stop the Commerce bandwagon IMO.

Re: DISCUSS: Ubercart is better than Drupal Commerce because...

I've used both. Commerce seems more like a sparse framework at present.

In addition to the missing modules/functionality jasonabc mentions, Commerce doesn't have contributions for subscription-based payments, and many other key payment gateway enhancements (the whole point of e-commerce). The latter key functionality is mature in Ubercart (e.g. uc_recurring). We could mention dozens of other examples. For me, this makes Commerce untenable to use at present unless I'm willing to write major pieces from scratch.

The other dimension is I'm not convinced yet if Commerce is intrinsically more stable / secure / architecturally correct. I have found my Ubercart installations more stable than Commerce and have been able to do everything I need to do with Ubercart. So, what's the point of switching again?

Re: Re: DISCUSS: Ubercart is better than Drupal Commerce because

The major UC issue I see if the almost complete lack of communication from the owners of this site. Yes a lot of people go to Drupal but if the main project site is not maintained a LOT of people will not try out UC. I understand people are busy with their regular lives but if that is so and its affecting the UC project they need to do something about it. ATM UC is the best OUT of the box commerce module for Drupal which is great having a commerce module that ties in with a content management system BUt there are a lot of much more mature ecommerce scripts out there which do giv e UC a run for its money.

Maybe the thing to do is to get rid of thsi site and redirect it to the Drupal UC module page and let the users use the Drupal issue tracker for support requests.

I do agree the Ubercart support forums are not a very good place for Ubercart support. The issue queue on DO isn't really either, but you have a better chance of your post getting answered on there at least. I agree with Marc, DC seems to be more of a framework at the moment. There's almost nothing in core (including shipping and payment modules). These are separate projects. I understand the reasons but it just makes the whole project more disjointed instead of "out of the box" like Ubercart. If there was a good selection of modules available it wouldn be less of a problem, but for there to be a single "shipping" module which doesn't contain any product ready shipping methods is crazy. The main thrust of Drupal Commerce seems to be - "here's the framework - now go build out what you need". I appreciate its power and capabilities, but I think Ryan S has gone off in the wrong direction with making it too modular and more framework-based. People don't have the time or the inclination to put it all together, they need something out of the box. Ubercart does a pretty good job here. DC (at the moment) does not.
