Is it possible to enable notifications (e.g. notification of a successful payment) for all customers by default?

you should be able to do it at
store admin/config/notification settings/checkout/
make sure "Send order confirmation e-mails to customers after checkout." is checked

That's the 'thanks for your order' mail. I'm talking about order update notifications, like when a payment has been received or an order has been shipped. They don't seem to be enabled by default. Is there a way to enable them by default?

it all depends on what is set up in your admin/site building/workflow_ng

mine is set up so once payment is received it is moved to completed. you can set it up however you like. if it is set to pending you go to store/orders/view orders select the order and at the bottom u can update it and check the "Send e-mail notification on update."

is this what u are talking about?

Yes; but don't customers see exactly the same checkbox?
The way I see it is that it's a user preference; if the user doesn't check the box manually he won't get any notification email.

customers do not see that cehck box when they are in their accnt, that is for admin only

go to users management and create a test user with just rights for authenticated user and u can see what a authenticated user sees, this assumes u have done the following:

u set permissions for authenticated user at
user management/access control

make sure u should a new role for admin, yourself, and grant all privileges and then check what u want for the others
