empty cart checkout

i have a product with 3 attributes and the default selection is "Please Select" on all 3 which gives the customer the choice to choose all the different option combinations. is there a way to make it so if the customer tries to checkout with out selecting the options it displays "empty cart" or something similar?

a solution above would solve this next question.
since i have the default attribute set to "Please Select" and i have the product price set to $25 the cart shows quantity 1 and $25 if they do not select any options. is there a way to make it show $0 if the do not select any options?

thanks

Attributes can be made required which adds on the "Please Select" option, but prevents the customer from choosing it. It sounds like what you want to happen, rather than "kind of" putting the product into the cart.

found it, on the page for the attributes, check boxes

i had seen the "required" option under attributes but never knew what it was for.
