inventory api module.. what triggers the decrement of the stock?

hi, i just setup the inventory + attributes api everything is working fine except the decrement of the stock level after the order has finished... anyone help me on this one, do i need to add anything to my payment module or workflow (i know it doesnt use workflow but could you hack it to make it work?)

Any help would be great.. this is the only thing i gotta do left before i can launch the site.

Stock is decremented in hook_order() in the "submit" case. That is, when the user pushes the submit order button and gets redirected to the "thank you for your order" screen.
