Use of fractions for quantity, like 1.5 yards.

I am trying to setup ubercart for my quilting shop, we sell fabrics in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 yard increments. Customer's may only need 0.25 yards of a fabric that would normally cost 12.99 a yard. When making quilts you may need a quarter yard of this and a quarter yard of that, and maybe 2.5 yards of the major areas. Can uber cart support something like this or am I in trouble. I really do not want to have to force customers to buy full yards of fabrics, nobody will use my site unless they only need bulk.

There is no incremental product purchase like this... the simplest solution would be to have a product represent a yard of fabric, another represent a 1/4 yard, etc. You could also use a product attribute to change the length (so the customer selects on the product page if they want to order fabric by the yard, 1/4 yard, etc.), although it could create confusion.

could a module be written to add those products (yard, 1/4, 1/2) to the cart automatically?

I am thinking of adding a field to the product that is my own quantity then send this information to my module and manipulate what is added to cart there.

Do you think the api can help me do that?
