Shipping Quotes: Item Weight + Packaging Weight

I ship light items. Many of them go out by USPS First Class Parcel. I will typically end up with a 6 to 10 ounce package, with 1 to 5 ounces of actual product. This means the USPS quote will be too low; easily accounted for by adding a markup. However there is no separation for First Class International Parcel. The price goes up much faster, so even with the markup I give quotes for $4 when the actual price with packaging will be over $9. If I mark up more, or raise the weight of each item, then I overcharge non-international customers.

I notice that someone had brought this issue up a year or two ago. Is there any way to add a base weight to the shipping quote of each product yet? Or, a way to have different shipping price markups for USPS and USPS International?

In my FedEx module, I addressed that issue by adding an option for a *weight* markup, which adds weight to the order via a percentage, multiplier, or simple addition. That way you can add on the weight of the packaging to any order. If that would work for you, you can open up a feature request on the Issue Tracker to ask that this be put into the USPS module too...

Probably just switch to ZenCart...I put $2000 through Ubercart and it was fun, but I am going to let Ubercart mature a bit more, I have needed to do a lot of hacks to get minimal functionality (and in some cases, correct spelling of messages to customers). I only have one product so far, so the pain of switching to a different cart is not that high. ZenCart already has tare weight options for shipping, correct stock level tracking with PayPal, disable purchase when there is no stock, and so on. Thanks for the hard work guys, Ubercart is moving up fast and I'll take another look in a year, maybe offer bounties for any lingering missing features.

Erm... I'd love to know where those spelling mistakes were so we can fix them. Sticking out tongue

It's not really your fault...the stock module included with Ubercart doesn't have basic functionality like barring purchase of more products than exist. So I used the "abandoned" Simple Stock / Inventory module.

The way to go here is uc_multi_stock, tested it meanwhile. Just wrote a minor bug report including patch.
