I have Ubercart 1.6 running and have chosen that users have to register to check out.

At the moment, customers are presented with the log in form or have to follow a link to get to the register form.

This heavily weights purchases towards returning customers rather than new ones.

I would ideally like to have both the login and register forms showing on the same page, equally weighted in their appearance - register on the left and login on the right in the content area for example.

Is there an easy way of achieving this?

Hmm... that form is a feature of Drupal core that we're simply using through an appropriate redirect. What you'd need to do is figure out how to alter that form to do what you're looking for. This shouldn't be too difficult if you've got some Drupal chops and know your way around hook_form_alter().

My thoughts are to show the user registration in a block assigned to the content for the log in page.

There may be a better way of doing it, but I don't know my way around Drupal hooks well enough really.

I believe that UC associates the order with the mandatorily-submitted email address whether or not the buyer is logged in.

The question that occurs to me is WHY do you require that your buyers be logged in? But whatever your reason, I believe you can simply use User Permissions to restrict purchases to authenticated users.
