We've had more customers who are new users to Drupal + Ubercart (and e-commerce in general) than we expected, which is great, but presents its own support challenges. In response, hot on the heels of our just-released basics guide, we're creating an Ubercart guide that picks up after you've done some initial setup and entered products, and focusing on getting the same kind of look and feel as you see in our theme examples.
We're going to be licensing the Ubercart chapter of Using Drupal to provide to all our Ubercart theme customers, which goes through all that fun store setup, product creation, attributes, etc. so this is the improving-customer-experience-and-making-it-pretty side.
So far a rough outline looks like this:
- Additional modules you probably want (CCK, Views, Pathauto, Google Analytics)
- Adding a store help page
- Changing catalog to grid display and customizing those settings
- Enabling Ubercart blocks
- Ideas for optimizing images (increasing product image size, square cropping, consistent backgrounds)
- Fine tuning customer checkout process -- should you send people to /cart? Have the quantity field turned on? Do they really need to see SKU on grid?
- Using multiple taxonomies (internal for organization/featuring products vs. customer-facing categories), plus helpers like Taxonomy Menu, using Views with Taxonomy for product blocks
- Creating static blocks, like for a free shipping promotion or return policy reassurance on your /cart page
- Highlighting key buttons (we do this on our themes already, but it's a good way to introduce adding your own CSS snippets)
- Doing reviews with Fivestar
- Other useful add-ons (UC Ajax stuff, FAQ module, Simplenews, related content, Service Links, Forward)
Feedback? Anything else you'd really like to see? Common issues?
This is all based on stuff we've already run into here on the forums, on IRC, and of course from customer emails. It will focus on D6/UC2.
(Sorry if this doesn't belong in the support forum, feel free to move -- just wanted it to be where people needing support would find it)
